Cooldown coming but don’t expect it to last

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) —After flirting with record-breaking heat to start the week, Yuma is finally getting a bit of relief—but it won’t last long.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will gradually cool through midweek, dropping from near-record levels to the mid-to-upper 80s by Wednesday. While that’s a step down, it’s still above average for late March.

Along with the cooler temps, there’s a slight chance for isolated showers and even a few thunderstorms through Wednesday. However, most of that activity is expected to stay over higher terrain in south-central Arizona, meaning Yuma will likely stay dry.

Forecasters say even when clouds increase, much of the moisture may not reach the ground—resulting in what’s known as “virga,” where rain evaporates before hitting the surface.

By Thursday, the region dries out again as a shift in the weather pattern brings back sunny skies and warmer conditions.

Looking ahead to the weekend, temperatures are expected to climb back into the low to mid 90s, once again approaching near-record territory.

Fire weather concerns could also increase later this week, as drier air moves in and humidity levels drop.

For now, residents can expect a brief break from the extreme heat—but it’s only temporary.
