Matadors baseball completes sweep of Yavapai

KYMA

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - #19 Arizona Western had a sweep of the Yavapai Roughriders on the horizon on Saturday.

The Matadors wasted no time building momentum, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Parker Husu scored on a fielder's choice and Elias Huber tacked on the rest with 2-RBI single

Castro sparked another surge in the third inning by driving a ball into the outfield that the right fielder couldn’t handle cleanly. Ten Shindo took advantage, racing home to score while Castro hustled all the way to third base. The misplay helped the Matadors establish a commanding lead early on.

The Roughriders answered with a run of their own, putting a runner on third before a chopper to Kawanishi resulted in an out at first. The play still allowed the runner to score, trimming the deficit, but AWC remained comfortably ahead at 5-1.

Yavapai looked to build momentum later, sending a deep shot to left field that sailed over the outfielder’s head for a ground-rule double. Despite the opportunity, the runner was left stranded, preventing any further damage.

Back on offense, the Matadors added to their total when Parker Husu launched a high fly ball to center field. Victor Lopez tagged up from third and beat the throw home, extending the lead.

The game didn’t end quietly, as the Roughriders mounted a late rally with three runs in the ninth inning to force extra innings. However, the Matadors held on, ultimately securing an 8-7 victory. The win pushes them to 36-9 overall and 16-8 in conference play.
