Hundreds of migrants cross river into Mexico

CIUDAD HIDALGO, Mexico (KYMA, KECY) - Near-chaos ensued at the Guatemala-Mexico border Monday, as hundreds crossed illegally into Mexico.

Scenes follow as they waded the shallow Suchiate river, determined to enter Mexico, en route to the United States.

The Central American migrants descended from the bridge joining the border between Guatemala and Mexico, recently closed by the Mexican National Guard Saturday.

Their solution? Cross the river.

Video shows as guard troops in riot gear blocked access to some migrants, and chased them back across to Guatemala.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopes Obrador said in a press conference last Friday that there are about 4,000 jobs available to migrants who wish to settle in Mexico's southern border.

Still, this confrontation with Mexican authorities directly tests President Trump's recent strategy of pressuring Mexico to keep migrant caravans away from the United States border.
