Undocumented immigrants allowed to apply for NY driver’s licenses
NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. (KYMA/KSWT/KECY) - Undocumented immigrants are now allowed to apply for driver's licenses.
This is possible through the state's green light law that allows applicants to submit any other form of identification when applying for a license.
Applicants will still have to pass a written and behind-the-wheel test.
Supporters of the law will increase the number of insured drivers and reduce the number of hit and runs.
Critics fear that this will speed up deportations or that the federal government will have access to applicants' information to use for these purposes. One of those being New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.
New York Attorney General Letitia James says that the law has safeguards to prevent that.
