Long Island firefighters warn against viral trend

NEW YORK (NBC, KYMA) - Long Island firefighters are warning parents about a dangerous viral trend involving squishy toys, also know as Needohs.

The viral trend has sent several kids to the hospital with burns, including a nine-year-old boy from Indiana who suffered burns to his face after placing a toy in the microwave.

"Bad idea, very dangerous, you're going to get hurt. Don't do it," urged Fire Chief Michael Uttaro.

Chief Uttaro says last Thursday, two sisters from Floral Park, four and eight-years-old, placed one of these squishy toys in the microwave.

"When they removed it from the microwave, it exploded, and oozed its boiling gel on them. The four-year-old suffered burns to her legs, I believe, her arms and a little bit of her face," said Uttaro.

The girls were rushed to NUMC with second to third degree burns.

County officials want to raise awareness because of how popular these toys are.

The sisters from Floral Park are expected to recover, but the fire marshal wants to prevent future incidents.
