Fallen U.S. service members honored at state park in Rhode Island

NEWPORT, R.I. (CBS, KYMA) - Fallen US service members were honored at Fort Adams State Park in Newport, Rhode Island Saturday ahead of Memorial Day.

The memorial consists of combat boots adorned with flags and placards, with each boot representing a U.S. service member killed in action after September 11, 2001.

Footage filmed by Elizabeth Brennan shows this year's display at Fort Adams State Park, which featured over 7,000 boots.

"Thank you for your sacrifice," Brennan wrote on X. "Remember this is what Memorial Day is about!"

Operation Stand Down Rhode Island launched the Boots on the Ground for Heroes Memorial in 2016, which is displayed in the state every year over Memorial Day weekend.
