Diamondbacks Carroll breaks hamate bone
Arizona's star right fielder is set to be sidelined for around six weeks
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (KYMA) - The Arizona Diamondbacks opened spring training this past Tuesday with pitchers and catchers reporting to camp, but the club will be without one of its biggest stars for the foreseeable future.
Outfielder Corbin Carroll is expected to miss significant time this spring after suffering a broken hamate bone in his right hand. The injury will sideline the 25-year-old for the remainder of camp and keep him out of the upcoming World Baseball Classic where he was set to play for the United States.
There is also uncertainty surrounding his availability for Opening Day on March 26, which is now roughly six weeks away.
The hamate bone is located at the base of the hand, between and below the ring and pinky fingers. The injury is relatively common among baseball players — particularly hitters — because of the repeated impact of the bat against the knob of the hand. Recovery typically takes six to eight weeks, though timelines can vary depending on healing and rehabilitation progress.
