SEATTLE, Wash. (KYMA) - The United States Men’s National Team received a significant boost ahead of its FIFA World Cup Round of 16 matchup against Belgium after FIFA confirmed striker Folarin Balogun will be eligible to play on Monday despite receiving a red card earlier in the tournament.

Balogun was sent off during the United States’ victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina on July 1 after stepping on a defender’s ankle. Under normal circumstances, a red card results in an automatic suspension for the player’s next match.

However, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee announced that Balogun will not be required to serve a suspension and will be available for the Americans as they look to advance to the quarterfinals.

The decision has generated widespread discussion throughout the soccer world. Multiple reports indicate President Donald Trump spoke with FIFA President Gianni Infantino regarding Balogun’s red card and requested that the incident be reviewed.

According to tournament records, 12 players have received red cards during this year’s World Cup. Balogun is the first player among that group to avoid a suspension, raising questions about the disciplinary process and the circumstances surrounding FIFA’s decision.

Balogun’s availability provides a major boost for Team USA heading into its highly anticipated knockout-round showdown against Belgium, with a place in the World Cup quarterfinals on the line.
