Yuma City FC begins new era as team begins training ahead of UPSL debut

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - Semi-professional soccer is making its return to Yuma.

Yuma City FC held its first training session Sunday evening as the club officially began preparations for its inaugural season in the United Premier Soccer League (UPSL).

Formerly known as Yuma United FC, the club enters Division One of the UPSL Arizona Conference with hopes of earning promotion to the state's Premier Division. A conference championship would move the team one step closer to competing on the national stage against top UPSL clubs from across the country.

The roster features a mix of experienced semi-professional players, former collegiate athletes and several standout local high school players. Giving the club a blend of veteran leadership and young talent.

The team's launch also marks the return of semi-professional soccer to Yuma for the first time in more than a decade.

"We're excited. All the players are excited, all our staff. To have the community come out and watch these boys play," said Yuma City FC owner and player Blas Gasca. "These boys are ready to give it all. Put Yuma in the highest spot we can. I believe in every single one of these boys. I've seen them play. I've seen the competition and I know that we will do big things. We just need the help of everyone out there to come support."

Before beginning league play, Yuma City FC will play two preseason friendly matches in August against professional clubs from Mexico.

The club is scheduled to open its first official UPSL season in September as it looks to establish itself among Arizona's top semi-professional soccer programs.
