ST. GEORGE, Utah (KYMA) - A talented group of young softball players from Yuma capped off an impressive week of competition at the American Fastpitch Association National Tournament in St. George, Utah.

The Yuma E-1 Prospects 12U team, led by head coach Eddie Leal, competed against some of the top youth softball programs in the country during the 60-team national event.

The tournament began with a difficult stretch for the Prospects, who dropped their first two games on Wednesday. The team responded on Thursday with a hard-fought 10-8 victory to earn its first win of the week before falling in its final pool play contest. The 1-3 record placed the Prospects in the Bronze Championship bracket.

Once bracket play began, the Yuma squad found its rhythm.

The Prospects opened Friday with a 5-3 victory before suffering a loss that sent them into the elimination bracket. Facing a win-or-go-home scenario, the team put together an impressive run to extend its tournament stay.

On Saturday, the Prospects survived a thrilling 11-10 contest to keep their season alive. They followed that performance with two more victories Sunday morning, winning 11-6 and 7-6 to continue their march through the bracket.

The string of elimination-game wins moved the team within two victories of reaching the championship game. However, the Prospects' tournament run came to an end later Sunday after five days of competition.

Despite the final result, the E-1 Prospects showcased the talent and determination of Yuma County throughout the week, finishing the tournament with five wins and proving they could compete with some of the nation's best teams.

For a group that has spent more than two years playing and developing together, the national tournament run served as another milestone in their growth both on and off the field.
