From setback to comeback: Luis Serna’s journey back to the mound

The San Luis Río Colorado, Mexico native made his presence felt in his first High-A start

WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. (KYMA) - Luis Serna's path in baseball hasn't been easy, but the 21-year-old pitcher is proving that resilience can carry a player a long way.

A native of San Luis Río Colorado, Mexico, Serna is working his way through the New York Yankees' farm system after recovering from Tommy John surgery, one of the most challenging injuries a pitcher can face.

"When the coaches tell you that you need surgery, that it's Tommy John, it's like a blow to your mind," Serna said. "It's scary. But for the recovery, it's all about your mindset. You have to be strong mentally."

Serna leaned on that mentality throughout his rehabilitation, focusing on staying positive and trusting the process.

When he finally returned to the mound, the nerves quickly faded.

"I didn't get scared when I threw my first ball," he said. "After that, it was just an amazing feeling."

That confidence showed in his first start at the High-A level. Serna struck out 10 batters over seven innings, allowing just one hit in a dominant outing that earned him South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week honors.

Despite the performance, Serna keeps his approach simple.

"Just relax on the mound and have fun like I did when I was a kid," he said. "Enjoy baseball. That's my mentality...just relax, have fun and play."

Now back on track in his development, Serna hopes his journey can inspire younger players chasing the same dream.

"If you put in the work, you're going to be a big leaguer," he said. "Just keep dreaming and have fun with baseball."
