Sidewinder tennis completes first undefeated season in school history

A perfect 14-0 record is thrusting San Luis tennis to state for the first time as a team in program history

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - San Luis made program history in dominant fashion.

The Sidewinders completed a perfect regular season for the first time, sweeping Kofa 9-0 in a matchup that showcased their depth and consistency across the lineup.

San Luis won all six singles matches and all three doubles contests to finish the season 14-0, capping off a milestone year for the program.

Despite the final score, the match featured competitive moments. San Luis’ Manuel Buchanan was pushed to three sets by Kofa’s Mateo Heras before pulling out the win in a tiebreaking third set, highlighting the level of competition on the court.

The sweep, however, reflected the Sidewinders’ overall strength and hard work throughout the season — something second-year head coach Camilo Gonzales said was built over time.

“It’s the work the boys put in this year,” Gonzales said. “They play during practice, off practice, year-round, it’s them, the boys have done the work, they've put in the practice time, the practice hours, the commitment.”

San Luis also cleared key hurdles during the season, including wins over strong Phoenix-area programs and a traditionally tough Gila Ridge team.

“I think overall the highlight was putting together a team to be able to win our section this year,” Gonzales said. “We knew we had the talent, the commitment and the athleticism to do it.”

With the victory, the Sidewinders now turn their focus to the postseason with another first ahead — a team appearance at the state tournament. While San Luis has sent individual players to state in the past, this marks the program’s first berth as a full team.

For a group that set out to make history, the Sidewinders have already done just that — and they’re not finished yet.
