AWC baseball and softball lock up three-seed in region tournament
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - The regular season is in the books for Arizona Western College baseball and softball, and now both programs are turning their attention to the postseason with momentum and high expectations.
On the baseball side, the Matadors put together one of the most complete seasons in the conference, finishing 38-13 overall and securing the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Region I playoffs.
Arizona Western's offense has been a major strength all year, scoring 435 runs while hitting .321 as a team and reaching base at an impressive .461 clip.
The Matadors have also been aggressive on the basepaths, tallying 141 stolen bases, while adding power with 40 home runs.
That balanced attack, combined with a pitching staff that has delivered 12 shutouts this season, has positioned the Matadors as a serious contender heading into the double-elimination tournament.
Arizona Western will open postseason play against Cochise College, with a chance to advance and keep their season alive in pursuit of a national tournament berth.
Meanwhile, the Lady Matadors are entering the postseason as one of the hottest teams in the conference.
Arizona Western softball finished the regular season 35-18 overall, winning six straight games to lock up the No. 3 seed in Region I play.
Offensively, the Matadors have been dominant, hitting .350 as a team while scoring 366 runs and launching 48 home runs.
Their ability to consistently get on base, paired with power throughout the lineup, has made them a difficult matchup all season long.
In the circle, Arizona Western has also been sharp, posting a 2.88 ERA with 10 shutouts, giving the team a strong one-two punch of pitching and offense heading into the postseason.
The Lady Matadors will face Eastern Arizona to begin the double-elimination tournament, with a return trip to the national tournament on the line.
With both teams earning top-three seeds and entering the playoffs with confidence, Arizona Western will look to turn strong regular seasons into deep postseason runs.
