YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - Local wrestlers had the opportunity to learn from collegiate athletes this weekend as the Matador Wrestling Club hosted a two-day camp featuring wrestlers from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott.

The clinic welcomed athletes ranging from elementary school to high school age, providing instruction focused on technique, skill development and building confidence on the mat.

Among the instructors was Yuma native Trenton Blomquist, a 2024 Yuma Catholic graduate who enjoyed one of the most successful high school wrestling careers in the state. Blomquist is a two-time Arizona state champion and a National High School Coaches Association champion. After spending the past two seasons wrestling at Embry-Riddle, he returned to his hometown to give back to the local wrestling community.

Blomquist also brought several of his former college teammates to help teach local athletes and share techniques they have learned competing at the collegiate level.

“It’s been great. I’m happy to be here. Help out the younger generation,” Blomquist said. “Just want to help kids get better and just want kids to take these things with them and put them in the tool bag and just want to get better every day.”

He also encouraged young wrestlers to take advantage of opportunities offered by the growing Matador Wrestling Club.

“It’s a newer club, Matador Wrestling Club. So I recommend if you want to get into wrestling come here,” Blomquist said. “Everybody just wants to get better and learn. And these guys just are hungry. Just show up every day, open minded, ready to learn. Just show up and you’re ready to get better every single day.”

The camp concluded Sunday after two days of training sessions, giving local wrestlers the chance to learn directly from collegiate competitors while continuing their development ahead of future seasons.
