Gila Ridge Volleyball sets and serves the Yuma community

The Hawks gave back to the city Wednesday afternoon by packing bags at the Yuma Community Food Bank

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - The Gila Ridge Hawks volleyball program has been dominant on the court, but on Wednesday afternoon, they took a break from the game to give back to the community.

The girls sorted and packed bags at the Yuma Community Food Bank amidst nearly a two week break in their schedule.

Head Coach of the Hawks Maris Grasis has done this with other programs he has been apart of and wanted to bring the tradition over to Gila Ridge.

"It's good to be a team on the volleyball court, but being a team within your community, is the way to go," Grasis said. "It's about being a good human being as well as a good volleyball player."

It wasn't hard for the Hawks to buy into Maris' tradition, as senior Maleigha Estrada explains the team is embracing giving back to the community.

"Doing things like this not only bonds us as a team but also gives back to the community at the same time," Estrada said. "It's awesome to be a part of that."

Senior Libero Jayden DuCharme said giving back is easy when she is with her team.

"Our team is really close. We've done a bunch of team dinners and stuff to help our team bond, so right now it feels like we're hanging out almost," DuCharme said.

It's a sure thing Gila Ridge will continue to do right on the court as they continue their season October 8 against Shadow Ridge, but events like this show there is more to life than volleyball.
