AWC baseball gets eliminated in slugfest while softball team claims #2 seed in upcoming tournament.
YUMA, Ariz. ( KYMA, KECY-TV ) - After losing in opening game the semi-final round in the Region I playoffs, the Arizona Western Matadors needed to win three straight in Tuscon to advance to the Region I final next week. They nearly pulled it off but came up short in a 17-16 loss to Yavapai on Saturday afternoon. Injuries depleted the Matadors pitching staff and they just didn't have enough arms to hold leads late. For the softball team, the Lady Matadors wrapped up their regular season at home versus Pima on Saturday afternoon at Charlie Dine Field. The Lady Mats earned a split with the Aztecs and due to a tie-breaker, earn the number two seed in the upcoming Region I playoffs.
In prep softball, Cibola, Gila Ridge and Antelope Union all lost in the opening round of the state playoffs. In baseball, Yuma Catholic defeated Winslow 9-2 to advance to the class 3A quarterfinals
