‘Toy Story 5’ sets record-setting weekend

(CNN, KYMA) - The latest entry of the "Toy Story" franchise took the top spot after having a big weekend at the box office.

Paramount's "Scary Movie," the sixth film in the franchise known for spoofing horror films, fell from third place to fifth place, earning $6.7 million.

A24's "Backrooms," a science fiction psychological horror film directed by Kane Parsons, starring Academy Award nominees Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve, and based on an internet-published horror story, stuck around in fourth place, scaring up $7.3 million.

Focus Features' "Obsession," a psychological horror film directed by Curry Barker, slipped from second place to third place with $14.2 million.

Universal's "Disclosure Day," starring Emily Blunt, Colman Domingo and Colin Firth and directed by Steven Spielberg, landing in second with $17 million.

Disney & Pixar's "Toy Story 5," which features Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and Joan Cusack reprising their roles of Woody, Buzz Lightyear and Jessie respectively, was the weekend's big winner, earning $160 million at the domestic box office.

This marks the biggest opening weekend of the year, and breaks the franchise's opening weekend record, which was previously held by 2019's "Toy Story 4."
