‘Scary Movie’ tops weekend box office with $55 million

(CNN, KYMA) - An fantasy action film based on a toy line and the latest film in a franchise known for spoofing horror films hit theaters this weekend, but only one of them claimed the top spot.

Fathom Entertainment and Glitch's "The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act" made $11.6 million in its first weekend in theaters, landing it in fifth place.

Focus Features' "Obsession," a psychological horror film directed by Curry Barker, dropped to fourth place, pulling in $25.6 million.

After winning the top spot last weekend, A24's "Backrooms," a science fiction psychological horror film directed by Kane Parsons, starring Academy Award nominees Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve, and based on an internet-published horror story, fell to third place, but made $25.9 million for a 10-day domestic total of $135 million.

Amazon MGM Studios' "Masters of the Universe," based on the popular toy line, opened in second place with $29.3 million.

Paramount's "Scary Movie," the sixth film in the franchise known for spoofing horror films, took the top spot, scaring up $56 million, a record opening weekend for the franchise.

The Wayans Brothers returned to the franchise following 2001's "Scary Movie 2," along with Anna Faris and Regina Hall, who appeared in the first four films, but did not appear in 2013's "Scary Movie 5."
