Sydney Sweeney reteams with American Eagle for new summer ad campaign

(CBS, KYMA) - American Eagle announced Wednesday (4/15) that they are "back together" with Sydney Sweeney in a new ad campaign for the summer.

The new campaign plays on Sydney's shortened name "Syd" as she shows off the brand's shorts.

There is no summer uniform more timeless than a pair of jeans," the release from the company states.

Sydney Sweeney and American Eagle released an ad in July 2025 that ended up turning controversial and sparked a debate on whether or not the ad was offensive.

The original ad shows Sydney in a pair of American Eagle jeans as she says she has "great jeans." The ad then turns to a play on words with jeans/genes.

"Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color," she says in the ad.

Some online argued the ad referred to eugenics, or the belief that some genetic features are superior to others.

"I was honestly surprised by the reaction," Sweeney told People Magazine in December 2025 after the controversy bubbled online. "I did it because I love the jeans and love the brand. I don't support the views some people chose to connect to the campaign. Many have assigned motives and labels to me that just aren't true."
