Hawk Fire continues to threaten communities in Nevada

RENO, Nev. (NBC, KYMA) - A fast-moving wildfire continues to threaten communities in and around Reno, Nevada, with thousands ordered to evacuate as firefighters battle dangerous conditions.

The Hawk Fire is burning in the Peavine Mountain area and had grown to more than 15,000 acres by Sunday evening.

The blaze has destroyed homes in northwest Reno, with shifting winds making it difficult for crews to reach some hotspots.

In addition, the fire has jumped over fire trucks as firefighters worked to slow its advance.

Evacuation orders and warnings have expanded north, including a mandatory go now zone that now reaches the edge of the University of Nevada.

About 42,000 people are under evacuation orders, while another 45,000 are in an evacuation warning area and are being told to prepare to leave for several days.

Multiple entrances to the Somerset community have been blocked by local police and Nevada National Guard troops.

According to officials, at least six people have been injured, including three first responders and three civilians.

They say the fire is human caused, but it remains unclear whether it was an accident or intentional.
