School aide arrested for Brooklyn stabbing

BROOKLYN, New York (NBC, KYMA) - A public school employee who briefly served as an NYPD officer has been charged for the fatal stabbing of a jogger in Brooklyn last week.

27-year-old Sayed Mohassib was arrested Saturday and charged with second-degree murder in an apparent random attack.

28-year-old Katie Suarez was jogging on the belt parkway bike path on October 30th when she was attacked by Mohassib.

Suarez was stabbed at least two times in the neck and was rushed to the hospital when her father found her after she didn't return from her jog.

Her mother said Suarez fought for her life in the hospital for several days before she succumbed to her injuries.

According to police, Mohassib told investigators he was walking along the path that night with a knife.

He also said he blacked out and was covered in blood when he regained awareness.

Surveillance footage helped identify Mohassib as a suspect and also captured him dumping bags of garbage near his home the night of the killing.

Sayed Mohassib was an NYPD rookie in the Bronx for about a month in October 2022, but was asked to be reassigned to the military on extended leave.

According to a source familiar, he was removed from the military due to mental health issues.

He resigned from the NYPD at the end of 2022 and was denied his request to be reinstated in January 2023.

The source said he was taken to the psychiatric ward at bellevue hospital for exhibiting strange behavior when he tried to be reinstated.

In 2024, his mother and sister reported that Mohassib threatened to chop them up, he was taken to Coney Island Hospital.

Most recently, he worked for the New York city department of education as a paraprofessional at the Bensen school in Brooklyn.

He continued to report to work at the elementary school after the stabbing.
