FIRST ALERT ACTION DAY: Tracking unseasonable October heat through Friday

Weather Authority/ KYMA

Tracking well-above-normal temperatures and nearing records through Friday across the Desert Southwest. I am tracking tropical moisture from Hurricane Rachel, expected to bring higher rain chances ahead.

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - Unseasonable October heat wave is here.

A Weather Authority First Alert Action Day is in effect until 8 pm Friday due to temperatures trending well above normal for this time of year.

Temperatures will be trending 10-15 degrees above average, which is a big deal since we are in October and the fall season; our average highs should be in the low 90s.

An Extreme Heat WARNING is in effect until 8 pm Friday for parts of the Desert Southwest, but includes Yuma and El Centro for well-above-normal temperatures. Highs will be between 104-110 degrees, and overnight lows will be between 74-83 degrees.

Even though temperatures aren't trending the hottest we have seen, we still have MAJOR heat risk, so it is important to take action and practice heat safety at all hours of the day. Be safe!

On our futuretrack hour-by-hour, it will be a calm and clear night, but staying warm as temperatures will slowly cool down. We have little relief from the heat, but at least it won’t be as hot like it is during the hot summer nights, but still going to be pretty warm.

We have a strong and unseasonable ridge of high pressure that is bringing in the higher heat to the region and keeping our temperatures well above average.

But I am tracking a lower pressure system to pick up tropical moisture in the coming days.

TRACKING THE TROPICS: I am tracking more tropical moisture that is on the way. Hurricane Rachel is inching closer, and starting Friday is expected to turn northeast and head toward Baja and the Desert Southwest. It is expected to bring moisture and possible winds to the Desert Southwest late this weekend and into early next week.

LOOKING AHEAD: I am tracking higher rain chances Sunday and into early next week from tropical moisture. Best chance for showers and storms is leaning on Sunday.

However, it is still uncertain how much rain and how impactful it may be to our area. But right now, some rain models are showing 0.25"-1.0" is possible. Again, it is still uncertain what the exact rainfall amounts will be right now.

I will bring more details as we get closer. Stay tuned.

Tracking a round of heat and record temperatures through the workweek. A Weather Authority First Alert Action Day is in effect until Friday as highs will be nearing the 110 mark. Stay cool and hydrated!

We are in for big changes this weekend and early next week. Tropical Moisture from Hurricane Rachel is expected to cool down our temperatures and bring in increasing rain chances and winds. This will mostly likely trigger for Weather Authority First Alert Action Days Saturday-Monday. Stay tuned for more details and updates!

Last 100-degree STATS: It may be October, and we may be in the fall season, but triple-digit heat isn't unusual for this time of year.

The average for the last for 100-degree temperature for Yuma and El Centro is in early October. The earliest we have seen is early September back in 1976. And the latest for 100-degree temperatures is late October for Yuma and early Novemeber for El Centro.

So even though we are in the fall season, where we can expect cooler temperatures triple-digits is still common for our area.
