Capitol building in Sacramento evacuated due to threat

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (NBC, KYMA) - A search found California's historic Capitol building and an adjoining construction site safe after the discovery of a threat Friday morning.

The California Highway Patrol says construction crews found the threat written on a wall but wouldn't reveal what it said.

Workers, who were asked to leave the site, gathered on the West steps of the capitol before being sent home.

Senate employees working in the historic capitol building were also evacuated.

In a statement, the Secretary of the Senate told staffers there was no reason to believe the threat credible.

Highway patrol officers spent several hours searching the site as a precaution.

The legislature was not in session.
