New security report of the Charlie Kirk shooting says school did not properly assess potential dangers

(NBC, KYMA) - A new report looking at the assassination of Charlie Kirk found the university where he was killed did not properly assess the danger and Kirk's own organization ignored security concerns.

The after-action report was released Friday by Utah Valley University, the school where he was killed in September of last year.

The independent review examined the planning ahead of the shooting and the response to it.

Investigators said the university did not do a formal security assessment, develop an action event plan and left critical decisions to Kirk's organization, Turning Point USA.

The report said a Turning Point representative insisted Kirk speak in a campus courtyard because he had been there previously and the organization knew the location.

School officials expressed reservations, but allowed it to go ahead.

Kirk was killed by a sniper stationed on a rooftop while debating students in the courtyard that is surrounded by tall buildings.

Thousands of people attended the event.

Kirk's family recently sent a wrongful death notice to Utah officials claiming the university made a series of reckless decisions that left him vulnerable.

The notice is a precursor to a lawsuit.

Tyler Robinson is charged with Kirk's death and is awaiting trial.
