Fire at a Michigan plastic plant cuts power citywide

SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. (NBC, KYMA) - Fire at a plastics plant in Michigan prompted a citywide power outage Friday.

The fire started just before 4 p.m. at the East Jordan Plastics site in South Haven, Michigan.

During the fire, officials say a propane explosion occurred sending even more thick smoke into the air. Crews have been working to fully extinguish the fire.

The main electrical substation for the city is located about 200 yards from the source of the fire…

And the risk to that line forced officials to shut off the power citywide.

Cutting off power to traffic lights and buildings throughout the area.

South Haven High School was forced to cancel homecoming events that were scheduled to take place tonight. Officials were not able to give an estimate for when power would be turned back on.

And the cause of that fire is not known at this time.
