Five people shot on the Virginia State University campus

PETERSBURG, Va. (NBC, KYMA ) - There was a heavy police presence at Virginia State University Saturday after five people were shot on campus overnight.

University police say the shooting happened just before 1:30 a.m. in the quad annexes.

At the scene, officers found five people suffering from gunshot wounds.

All of the victims were taken to nearby hospitals with one in critical condition.

The university confirmed a VSU student was among the other four victims that suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

That student was later released from the hospital.

The university was temporarily place on lockdown and access to campus resumed just before 8:30 a.m.

Police say they are looking for multiple suspects and an investigation is ongoing.
