FIRST ALERT: Tracking intense heat wave impacting the Desert Southwest this week

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY-TV) - An Excessive Heat WARNING is in effect for parts of the Desert Southwest until 8 p.m. FRIDAY.

Areas like Imperial and La Paz Counties have the potential and risks for highs up to 115 degrees this week.

There's also an Air Quality Alert issued and will go into effect TUESDAY due to high levels of ozone (smog).

With all this consistant heat in the forecast all week long, we MUST practice heat safety at all times.

It's going to be a brutally hot later this week as a strong ridge of high pressure moves in, climbing our temperatures near 120 degrees by Friday.

Right now, the Desert Southwest is under a Weather Authority FIRST ALERT to prepare for sweltering heat in the days ahead, which could lead to potential First Alert ACTION DAYS. Stay tuned!
