Five cats dead, home destroyed in 42nd Ave house fire

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - A home was destroyed in a fire that caused the death of five cats.

Thursday morning at 9 a.m. Rural Metro Fire responded to a report of a house on fire on 3rd Place and 42nd Avenue.

When firefighters arrived they found a two-story home with heavy fire and smoke showing.

Fire crews immediately pulled multiple hose lines to put out the fire, and were told by a resident of the home that nobody was inside.

The resident told firefighters 20 cats were unaccounted for and fire crews quickly began to search for them inside the burning home.

Most of the cats were able to escape, however, five cats did die in the fire.

Firefighters spent four hours extinguishing the fire and searching for hotspots.

One person who lived in the home was treated for blood pressure issues and the Red Cross and Amberly's Place were called to assist residents.

The home was a total loss.
