San Luis councilmember trial setting pushed back once again
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The City of San Luis councilmember accused of leaving the scene of a crash will have another chance to decide on accepting a plea offer or going to trial.
50-year-old Africa Luna Carrasco was set for a change of plea or trial setting last Thursday, but the hearing was put on hold until next month.
Carrasco's defense asked the court for a continuance to do more interviews with officers who conducted the investigation.
The judge asked both counsels if the case could go to trial next month and Carrasco's defense said it wasn't possible as there is even more "extensive discovery" to go through.
In March, a grand jury indicted the councilwoman on one count of leaving the scene and two counts of forgery.
Deputies say her car was involved in a crash off of Avenue C and County 19th Street, the popular dunes area in August 2021.
The councilwoman is accused of being at the scene of the crash, filing a false stolen vehicle report and filing a false proof of loss claim for the vehicle with an insurance company.
She will return to court in january.
