Police unsure if University of Idaho murder victims were targeted

(CNN, KYMA/KECY) - As students and victims' families mourn the lives lost in the stabbing murders of four University of Idaho students, officials are now saying the killings may not have been a targeted attack.

A statement from the City of Moscow referenced an earlier "miscommunication" with the Latah County Prosecutor's Office, which previously said the attacker or attackers had "specifically looked at that residence" and targeted one or more of the occupants.

The statement also says detectives "do not currently know if the residence or any occupants were specifically targeted" and that the investigation is ongoing.

CNN has reached out to Moscow police and the county prosecutor's office for clarification.

No suspect has been identified and the murder weapon, believed to be a fixed-blade knife, has not been found.

Authorities have not ruled out the possibility that more than one person may be involved in the stabbings.
