Remnants of Tropical Storm Kay hits San Luis, AZ

SAN LUIS, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - It’s been overcast in San Luis, Ariz. with heavy rain in the morning, forcing some schools to end classes early due to Tropical Storm Kay.

All 600 students at Ed Pastor Elementary left early due to a power outage when classes started.

No working phones, water, electricity or lights for students and faculty.

Their principal, Maria Camacho, says the school alerted parents through Facebook about the early release.

“No electricity means no AC and no phones and no water," said Principal Camacho. "So, we communicated through Class Dojo and Facebook for parents to start picking up their children at school ‘cause it’ll get very hot and we have no water for the restrooms, so parents have been responding very well.”

Classes for the kinder through sixth graders will return Monday.

But for now, some students like Yaretzy Nuñez say they’re more than happy to get an early start to the weekend.

“I’m gonna eat! I’m gonna play and that’s it,” exclaimed Nuñez.

San Luis's fire chief, Angel Ramirez, says to always have at least three days worth of backup supplies for any type of emergency.

He also says the fire station welcomes anyone who needs guidance on what to do if the storm progresses.

“Any type of device you need medically, they can come to the fire station today, charge ‘em and then they can take it home," said fire chief Ramirez. "It’s very important just to be prepared for any situation that arises.”

Sandbag filling stations are available for all San Luis residents just north of the fire station all weekend, just be sure to bring a shovel with you.

Please use caution when out inclement weather.
