High earthquake activity in Imperial County

A 3.6 magnitude quake struck just before noon on Thursday - News 11's Wiley Jawhary reports

EL CENTRO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - Earthquake activity is high in Imperial County with a string of quakes shaking the area in the last 72-hours.

The latest, a magnitude 3.6 quake struck Thursday right before noon. A magnitude 3.5 quake shook the Valley Tuesday night.

The series of quakes bring us right back to the question, are we ready for the next big earthquake?

The U.S Geological Survey says the Brawley seismic zone located between the northern end of the Imperial Fault and the southern end of the San Andreas Fault is a tectonically active area, with numerous earthquake swarms occurring over the last several decades.

The El Centro Fire Department urges residents to prepare for the event that will give no warning before it happens.

A string of earthquakes rattled Imperial County Tuesday, with the latest, a magnitude 3.5 earthquake, shaking Imperial County Tuesday night.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was centered about four miles NNW of Brawley, Calif.

A magnitude 3.2 quake hit the Imperial Valley at 8:59 p.m. in the same area.

Batallion Chief Cedric Ceseña of El Centro Fire says it is important Valley residents remain prepared for an earthquake.

"Residents should have kits at home with essentials, maybe even medicine," he said.

But are Imperial Valley buildings and residential areas also ready to withstand a big earthquake?

Building manager Frank Soto in El Centro says now more than before, buildings can withstand major shaking thanks to advanced engineering.

"I am very confident that our residents are all living in a very safe place, buildings are safe here in El Centro, the newer ones are a little better than the older ones. In general, every home out here has survived one or two or three big time earthquakes," he said.
