City of Yuma celebrates 108th birthday
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The City of Yuma is celebrating its 108th birthday on April 7, 2022.
Yuma was officially charted as a city in 1914 after Arizona became a newly formed state but the wilderness area was explored in the 1540s.
Though Yuma as a city has a major history before being given its name.
Tribes in Yuma were mostly undisturbed until the 1680s when California and parts of Arizona were being charted.
Many traveled to the area in 1849 as the gold rush grew in popularity then the Yuma Territorial Prison was opened in 1876.
