Students not protesting in Calexico after district response
CALEXICO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - The Calexico Unified School District (CUSD) said students who have been walking out of classes in support of their teachers may be subject to truancy.
Students who support their teachers say there are no plans to walk out of classes today.
Additionally, teachers have also been asking for better health benefits.
Students say they heard their teacher's insurance plans were changed making many of them upset.
On Tuesday, about 200 students took to the streets and protested.
Teachers have been demanding higher wages for about four years now.
The district did offer them a 22% increase, however, teachers say they feel offended by this.
They say it's simply because it's not enough.
The ACT says CUSD pays the lowest salaries in the area.
The union says its teachers earn slightly more than $46,000 a year, while those at the El Centro Elementary School District start in the area of $62,000.
CUSD says Calexico's City Councilmember Raul Ureña appeared to be helping students during the walkout on Thursday.
Ureña will have a statement response exclusively delivered to KYMA in our Evening Edition at 6 p.m.
