BA.2 subvariant is in the Imperial Valley per Imperial County Public Health Department - News 11's Wiley Jawhary reports

EL CENTRO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - The Imperial County Public Health Department (ICPHD) says the BA.2 Omicron subvariant has made its way to the Imperial Valley.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says the BA.2 subvariant is now the most dominant strain in the United States, causing more than half of all Covid-19 infections in the last week.

Janette Angulo the director at the ICPHD says this may be more contagious.

"Studies show it may be more transmissible than the original Omicron but may not be more severe," she said.

News 11's Wiley Jawhary will have the full COVID-19 update on the Evening Edition at 6 p.m.
