Gov. Newsom comments on vaccination rates, celebrates lottery winner

Continues "Vax for the Win" program

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. (KYMA, KECY/CBS) - Governor Gavin Newsom came to San Diego County Friday for the second drawing in California's first-of-a-kind "Vax for the Win" incentive program.

The program will award 15 Californians $50 thousand each when completed. Just last week, three San Diegans were among the selected recipients.

Gov. Newsom and his team took the chance to celebrate 17-year-old Nancy Gutierrez as Friday's winner of the vaccination-based lottery.

At first, Nancy couldn't believe she had won. It took several calls from the program's headquarters for her to finally realize it wasn't a joke.

10 people will each win $1.5 million when the state fully reopens on Tuesday, June 15, during a final cash prize drawing.

"Vax for the Win" is also providing $100 million in $50 prepaid/grocery cards for newly vaccinated Californians, while supplies last.
