SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY)- 15 people are arrested after being involved in a maritime smuggling event in Mission Bay over the weekend, according to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

CBP says the agents observed a smuggling event taking place on a Cabin Cruiser fishing boat at the Ski Beach launch ramp in Mission Bay.

After agents approached the boat, the individuals rapidly began exiting the vessel, attempting to flee from the agents. However, agents were able to stop them.

According to CBP, six people were suspected of human smuggling.

Records revealed nine people were Mexican nationals ranging from 27 to 41 years old who admitted being in the U.S., illegally.

The other six additional smugglers were U.S. citizens, including a 46-year-old Mexican national who was the boat's captain. The other men ranged from 20 to 30 years, and one 25-year-old woman.

The six human smugglers face federal charges.  The boat and the three vehicles were seized by U.S. Border Patrol.
