Former Mexicali officer shoots alleged home thief

This was the scene just outside of the home where an alleged thief was shot a by a former police officer Tuesday morning in Mexicali.

MEXICALI, Baja California, Mexico (KYMA, KECY, CBS 13) - Police in Mexicali said one man is in serious condition after a former police officer shot him, allegedly for trespassing on his property and trying to steal several items from his home.

The incident happened early Tuesday morning, in the west part of Mexicali.

Police said the former officer was sleeping when the alleged thief broke into his home. But just minutes later the officer woke up, and police say that's when he shot the suspect in the head.

The suspect was taken to the hospital in serious condition, even though at first he had been reported dead.

The homeowner will not be facing any charges.
