Three dead after flash flooding in the Newcomb community of New Mexico

NEWCOMB, N.M. (NBC, KYMA) - Flash flooding has claimed the lives of three people in the four corners region of New Mexico.

Authorities said three died overnight when flood waters swept them away near the town of Newcomb on the Navajo Nation.

Officers responded to reports of people being washed away, and located two adults and a teen that had drowned in the raging water.

The area has been hit recently with severe monsoon rains triggering flash flooding across parts of the community, damaging roads and other infrastructure.

Officials are urging residents to avoid flooded areas and washed out roads.
