Jan. 6 Committee announce referral charges against Trump
(CNN) - The House Committee investigating the January 6 Capitol insurrection will announce its recommending criminal charges against former President Donald Trump on Monday.
Over the last 17 months, the panel has interviewed more than 1,000 witnesses investigating Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election and his role in inciting the Capitol riots.
It’s the final stretch.
The January 6 House Select Committee will hold its final public meeting Monday, where its expected to announce it will refer at least three criminal charges against former President Donald Trump to the Department of Justice.
"As a former prosecutor, I think there's sufficient evidence to charge the President," Democratic Representative Adam Schiff spoke.
Possible charges
According to a source familiar with the matter, the possible charges include:
- Insurrection
- Obstruction of an official proceeding
- Conspiracy to defraud the federal government
But, it's unclear what impact the House referrals could have.
A DOJ special counsel investigation is also already examining trump in its own probe into the January 6 insurrection.
"Well, I don't know what the Justice Department has. I do know what's in the public record. The evidence seems pretty plain to me. This is someone who in multiple ways tried to pressure state officials to find votes that didn't exist. This is someone who tried to interfere with the joint session, and even inciting a mob to attack the capitol. If that's not criminal, then, I don't know what is," Schiff continued.
Additionally, "I think that justice will take these referrals if they come seriously because they have been gathering evidence...for a very long time," Former Federal Prosecutor Michael Zeldin said.
A spokesman for Trump criticized the committee in a statement, calling it a "kangaroo court."
After Monday's hearing, the committee will then release its full report on Wednesday.
