Thursday marks National Donut Day

(CNN, KYMA) - It's time to shine a light on a sweet treat, probably with a cup of morning coffee, as Thursday, November 5, is National Donut Day.

There are various stories about the origin of donuts. Some say Dutch settlers brought them to North America. However, there's a reference of them in Washington Irving's "History of New York," which came out in 1809.

Donuts come in a variety of flavors and fillings although some prefer them plain or just glazed. They're also considered among the nation's favorite dessert items.

People who want to celebrate the holiday can look for donut deals at stores and businesses or make a batch at home.
