Tuesday marks National Taco Day

(CNN, KYMA) - One of the world's most popular food items is appropriately being honored Tuesday.

It's "National Taco Day," which can be eaten as a snack or a proper meal.

Historical evidence shows indigenous people who were in the lake region of the valley of Mexico put fresh, soft corn tortillas with small fish.

Tacos made their debut in the United States in the early 20th century when street vendors would sell them in cities in the southwest.

They quickly grew in popularity nationwide, with nearly five billion tacos eaten in the U.S. every year.

In 2024, National Taco Day was moved from a specific date to the first Tuesday in October. That way it will always fall on a "Taco Tuesday."
