SpaceX announces new launch site in Louisiana

ABBEVILLE, La. (NBC, KYMA) - SpaceX announced Tuesday plans to add a new launch site in the state of Louisiana, investing $100 billion in the project.

The site will be near Vermilion Bay, southeast of Lafayette, Louisiana.

The project is expected to create 3,000 direct jobs over the next decade, with an average salary of $92,600.

SpaceX said it will use in-state vendors and contractors for work connected to the project.

To address environmental concerns, the company says it plans to work with local conservation groups to help protect and improve natural resources around the site.

Construction is expected to begin next year, with the first launch possible as early as 2029.
