Dallas Zoo announces birth of baby elephant

DALLAS (CBS, KYMA) - The Dallas Zoo announced the birth of a healthy baby African elephant Monday.

The zoo said after a nearly 21-month pregnancy mom Mlilo gave birth to a baby boy on July 26.

"This precious calf made his arrival at 12:25 pm with members of our animal care team there to witness this incredible moment," the zoo wrote on Instagram. "The little one weighed around 230 pounds at birth and was already standing and nursing within his first hour of life."

The zoo added that Mlilo "has been doing an incredible job caring for her calf, and the two are spending these early days together behind the scenes as they continue building their bond."
