Florida man dies after ICE encounter

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. (NBC, KYMA) - Investigators say a 28-year-old man was running across a St. Augustine highway, fleeing an encounter with ICE agents at a near by gas station, when he was struck and killed by a passing semi-truck.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, ICE and Homeland Security Investigations agents responded to a WAWA on state road 16 just before 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Troopers say four people inside a vehicle ran from the area after encountering the agents.

Investigators say one of those men ran across state road 16 directly into the path of an oncoming semi-truck.

The truck driver stopped immediately and tried to render aid, but the man died at the scene.

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the fatal crash, while ICE and Homeland Security are looking into the encounter that led to it.
