Former Las Vegas youth pastor accused of murdering his wife has died

LAS VEGAS (NBC, KYMA) - A former Las Vegas youth pastor, arrested this week and accused of murder in his wife's 2006 death, has died.

Judge Eric Goodman announced David Vander Meer's death as his scheduled extradition hearing in Las Vegas Justice Court got underway Thursday morning.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department released a statement saying a 49-year-old man at the Clark County Detention Center died after being taken to the hospital for treatment for "self-sustained injuries." It did not name the inmate, but Vander Meer was 49.

Vander Meer had been in police custody since Monday, June 22, accused of murder in the 2006 death of his wife.

Bernadette Vander Meer, then 28-years-old, fell to her death while hiking at Angels Landing in Zion National Park.

Her death was ruled an accident at the time.
