Texas jury finds teen guilty of murder in fatal stabbing of fellow high school student

MCKINNEY, Texas (NBC, KYMA) - A Texas jury found a teen guilty of murder in the fatal stabbing of a fellow high school student at a track meet last year.

19-year-old Karmelo Anthony was sentenced to 35 years in prison Tuesday after a jury convicted him of murder in the 2025 killing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf.

Jurors reached the verdict in less than three hours.

Prosecutors argued Anthony intentionally stabbed Metcalf during a confrontation at a district track meet in Frisco, near Dallas.

Anthony admitted to the stabbing, but maintained he acted in self-defense after being confronted by members of a rival school's track team.

During sentencing, jurors rejected a defense argument that the attack was committed under sudden passion, which could have reduced the punishment.

Emotions ran high in the courtroom as the verdict was read, while demonstrators supporting both sides gathered outside the courthouse.
