Canadian prime minister confirms Gordie Howe International Bridge is opening soon

(CBS, KYMA) - Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Tuesday the Canadian-built bridge across the Detroit River is finally set to open.

The bridge is jointly owned by both Canada and the state of Michigan.

"It's positive news," said Prime Minister Carney. "Obviously the bridge will be open the end of the week and you know, symbol, symbol, but also a fact of cooperation(s) between between our countries, great for Canadians going across the border, Americans coming across the border and for commerce."

On Friday, a ribbon cutting ceremony of the Gordie Howe International Bridge will take place. The actual opening will take place later this month.

Back in February, President Donald Trump demanded the U.S. federal government should have half the ownership of the bridge.

The bridge is named after the late Canadian hockey player from the Detroit Red Wings, Gordie Howe, and the project was negotiated by the former governor of Michigan, Rick Snyder.

The bridge is paid for by the Canadian Government and has been under construction since 2018.
