Fast-spreading wildfire breaks out in the Texas Panhandle

CANYON, Texas (CBS, KYMA) - A fast-spreading wildfire broke out in the Texas Panhandle Thursday, forcing evacuations as it burned through several structures, including a well-known trestle bridge in Canyon.

The Hunggate Fire in Canyon had spread to more than 14,000 acres, as of Friday afternoon, and was 40% contained, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service.

Footage filmed by Chris Williams shows heavy smoke billowing from the blaze Thursday.

"A couple of fires around us today, due to high winds and lightning strikes," Williams wrote in a post on X.

All evacuations in the area were lifted by Thursday evening and damage assessments are still underway, but city officials have told local media that the structure loss is expected to be substantial.

In a statement to KFDA, BNSF Railway said that its Plainview Subdivision is currently out of service due to the loss of the trestle bridge in Canyon.

"A crew is on site working with first responders to clear the area and our teams are mobilizing to rebuild the bridge," BNSF said. "We continue to monitor conditions closely to maintain safety. Customers in this area will continue to receive service by rerouting the traffic on an alternative route."
