One dead after being hit by an airplane taking off from Denver airport

(CBS, KYMA) - A Frontier plane struck and killed a person on the runway during takeoff from Denver International Airport Friday night.

The airport says it can confirm a pedestrian jumped the perimeter fence and was hit just two minutes later while crossing the runway.

Passenger John Anthens took video of those on the aircraft evacuating from the plane on a slide. He tells CBS News he saw an explosion in the wing area and passengers screamed as smoke filled the cabin.

Frontier says the pilots aborted takeoff and all 224 people aboard safely evacuated.

Audio from Broadcastify captured what one of the pilots said just after the person was struck.

"We were already taking off and we were going pretty fast, and I felt like the plane started to tilt up when out of nowhere, it just...we felt like a thud and heard an explosion," said Jose Cervantes, one of the passengers.

Denver airport says the fire department put out the engine fire.

12 people reported minor injuries and five were taken to the hospital, according to the airport. The plane had been scheduled to fly to Los Angeles before the incident.
